2014Black Rock Dessert is your annual guide to the best treats on the Playa! We could not be more excited to tell you about this year's selection of Burning Man desserts. From West End Wit's mancakes to Center Camp Cafe's cappuccino, 2014 will definitely be remembered as one of the sweetest. Your first stop, of course, is the CENTER CAMP CAFE. Apart from ice, fuel, water, and gray water disposal, coffee is the only thing you can spend real money on at Burning Man. And this year's brew master, Sweet Martha, has something special steeping for BRC residents. You can still take yours straight, but you'd be missing out on the cinnamon dream that Sweet has to share. Try it! Back again for the third year is BRC OASIS' wood fired dessert pizza. If you've been to the Oasis, you already love the kitsch of their plastic palm trees and blow up couches. But only if you've stumbled on them after dark would you have a chance to see the Oasis crew at their finest. With a tiny pizza oven, fueled by hickory pellets, Oasis cooks up irresistible pizzas. And in true Black Rock Dessert fashion, they do dessert first! Look for fresh fruit and sugar glaze pizzas early in the week and honey delight after Wednesday. Not to be missed! Speaking of dark, one of our 2014 favorites is CARMELONIA's dark chocolate root beer. Their secret recipe home brew is something we didn’t even know we were missing. The natural fit of pure cacao and sweet bubbly (root) beer is so perfect in the hands of these Playa masters, we are swooning with pleasure. Pairs well with Carmelonia’s classic caramel corn. Highly recommend! There are several camps dishing out Man Cakes again in 2014, but among the few that have really got it right is WEST END WITS at 2:00 and Lapis Lazuli. The real show is the array of toppings that WEW offers. From the predictable fresh fruits (even on Friday!) and whip cream to the exotic cayenne pepper and pickles. Pairs well with sunrise, but you better get in line before the dawn because these delectables go fast! Normally we wouldn't commit the faux pas of including a pancake and a crepe together in our top picks, but Black Rock City newcomer HOT PINK has something so irresistible that we had to make an exception. Just like West End Wit, Hot Pink's dizzying array of toppings is the real treat. But what forced us to admit a second flat pastry cake to the 2014 list is the shear size of HP's crepe. These might be better categorized as a dessert burrito than a responsible treat. Bring a friend and share! No Black Rock Dessert list would be complete with out the night cap. And this year’s is brought to you by CAMP HOLLY HELL where the signature drink is rum and nutmeg served in a tumbler and set alight. It is the perfect warm up in the cold before sunrise.
